Plastic...really?

Is nothing sacred? I was looking online, checking out Spring 2010 lines, when I stumbled upon an unfortunate trend that should never have left the closet: clear, plastic clothing and shoes. Who thought that this strange, albeit common, design choice was a good idea? I think Prada must have had a momentary breakdown. I will say that I don't think that this slight error is an accurate reflection of the rest of the line, which is beautifully tailored by the way. And in my quest for pretty things, I wandered into Zac Posen's Spring 2010 runway show only to find yet another series of unfortunate events. Though his work is usually flirty, fun and tasteful, there were several plastic knee length coats, seemingly lost in the melange of pretty dresses and blouses. WTF?

To be clear, I am not the judge, jury or the executioner but I do find it odd that top, well-known, thoughtful designers are relying on materials I use to cover my son's stroller in a downpour. There are so many luxurious, detailed, colorful and, well, breathable fabrics that can shape a look, a mood or a trend. These design houses have access to the finest textiles in the world. So I end my day befuddled, and disappointed but I guess I will be really prepared for the rain.
