Stars and Stripes

I have to admit that I have a slight obsession with stripes. There is something very luxurious about this pattern; perhaps it takes me to my beautiful, albeit strange fantasy life that I have always admired from afar, the fabulous nautical lifestyle. Perhaps it was my years growing up, on weekend and holidays, on the Connecticut shore. Perhaps it was my prep school influence. I have always loved boats as a child, the ocean and beach were a permanent backdrop to every summer excursion. And the lifestyle that accompanies yachting and sailing is obnoxious in many ways but aesthetically cool and elegant in its own right. It doesn't hurt that some of my earliest fashion memories were of Ralph Lauren's photo and TV ads depicting gorgeous, tan and clearly sophisticated men, women and children sitting on the bow of a boat, sailing in an open ocean without a care in the world. Stripes have become reinvented and reused, a recycled idea that has never really gone out of fashion. I enjoy and respect the ways in which this pattern has morphed over time; its evolution speaks volumes about how sturdy, steadfast and beautiful a simple stripe can be.

  1. You are absolutely right-something as simple as a stripe is so beautiful! I am loving stripes at the moment, too. These photos are gorgeous.
